Almost a year ago, I was half listening to Yoshua Bengio, the guy from right here in Montreal everyone calls the godfather of AI, talk about how AGI (as smart as a person at basically everything) might not be that far off. It sounded like something out of I, Robot. Something I'd watch, not live through.

This week it stopped sounding like a movie. It became the cover of Time.

I grew up in the Google era. By the time I was a teenager, I knew things my parents didn't, because I could look them up faster than they could ask someone. The internet made my generation a little smarter than the people who raised us.

My kids won't get that deal. They're the first generation growing up next to something that might always be smarter than them. That's the shift this whole issue is about.

Here's the plain version of what's actually going on, and where the line really sits.

Bengio has a simple test for this, from that same interview. If a machine can measure something directly, that's not AI, it's just a sensor. AI only shows up when there's no direct way to measure the answer, so the machine has to guess based on patterns it picked up from examples.

OpenAI's own definition is a system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work. That gap between "notices things for you" and "smarter than you at everything" is the whole conversation happening in tech right now.

That disagreement is the point. You're not asking one AI for the safest, middle-of-everything answer anymore. You're watching four points of view argue their way to a decision, the way a room full of real advisors actually would.

What's the AGI version of this, you ask? It's the 16 agents Time Magazine described OpenAI showing off, splitting a math problem into pieces, coordinating, and building a proof together, except there are as many of them as needed, moving at a speed no home office ever will. Yours is the same idea, just small enough to watch happen at your kitchen table.

This issue's real ask isn't about a better email or a smarter Italy trip plan. It's this: get your office to argue out a real decision today.
